Rakuten Technology Award 2015

Rakuten Technology Award is given yearly to individuals or organizations who have made the greatest contributions to the growth of technology and the web. The award was established in 2008, and this year it is the 8th time to be given out. This year, our wish was to praise the achievement in innovation and the evolution of web engineering technology under the theme of "Our Crimson, Your Kaleidoscope." In the past few years, AI research has quickly evolved. At the forefront of this research, Professor Yutaka Matsuo has been a key thought leader as he helps people understand the significance of the AI evolution and the importance of deep learning. His book provides everyone with a great overview of the technology trends and how they will impact the world. We recognize Professor Matsuo for his research and his contributions to the field.

Kenji Hiranabe

Reason

Implementing agile development, supporting agile communities and bridging the gap between Japan and the rest of the world is very important for the advancement of society. Mr. Kenji Hiranabe has long devoted his time and efforts to do all three for many, many years. He co-authored a book with Professor Ikujiro Nonaka which has greatly influenced many people in this area of development. Mr. Hiranabe's long-standing contributions in the software industry in Japan are widely recognized by everyone. We honor him for his achievements.

The world needs more engineers. Engineers with the understanding of computer science and practical programming skills are in great demand everywhere. One educational institution is making a big difference: Make School. Make School provides curricula to promote the interest in both of these areas.
