Laurent Ach

Laurent Ach created and manages the French team of Rakuten Institute of Technology, the research and innovation department of Rakuten, in the domain of Artificial Intelligence and Virtual/Augmented Reality. He started his career in Thales Group, working on defense projects using neural networks and on car prototyping using advanced computer graphics. He later worked for Safran Group and several startup companies. He has been CTO of Living Actor, a company creating virtual assistants, and CTO of Rakuten France. He coordinated and contributed to several French and European collaborative research projects and is a member of scientific evaluation committees in the domains of machine learning and interaction.

Computer Vision - The Now & The Future 16:00 - 16:40
Computer vision is a relatively young research area with the quest of giving computers the 'sense of vision'. Several current systems surpass human-level performance on specific tasks, such as image classification. In this session researchers from the Rakuten Institute of Technology will present a selection of their current projects, discussing business-related applications in e-commerce, video analysis, and medical imaging. In a follow-up panel discussion we will present several possible outlooks, highlighting both risks and opportunities of this rapidly evolving field.
