Security meets analytics
Cyberattacks to enterprises are becoming advanced and sophisticated so that traditional security countermeasures sometimes don't work. The situation leads us a new approach called "security analytics" which correlates various information and events from networks, software, and infrastructure, and detects an abnormal behavior. There are new challenges to provide end-to-end security in the current emerging IT environment. This talk will cover the new trend of security analytics and introduce ongoing activities in IBM Research and Development.

Elixir: The Joy of Ruby, the Power of Erlang
The software world is changing. Almost every program is now concurrent. And many are also distributed. But the tools we use are still rooted in the old sequential, local world.
We've tried to fix this in the past. Languages such as Erlang enable developers to write highly concurrent, highly reliable, distributed systems. But Erlang is not an easy language to approach—developers are put off by the strange syntax and terminology.
The Elixir language fixes this problem. It runs on the Erlang virtual machine, and has all the capabilities of Erlang. But its syntax is as approachable as Ruby. Developers everywhere are starting to look to Elixir to help them address the problems of tomorrow.
Come and see why why I am excited by this new language.

TSUBAME2.5 to 3.0 and Convergence with Extreme Big Data
TSUBAME2.5 is an upgrade to TSUBAME2.0 commissioned in November 2010, by replacing all the 4224 NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPUs to the latest Kepler K20x, with peak performance of 5.76 and 17.1 Petaflops in double and single point precision arithmetic respectively, latter being the fastest metric in Japan. By overcoming several technical obstacles, TSUBAME2.5 has demonstrated x2-3 speedup for many applications on the whole machine, demonstrating multi-petascale performance, as well as being a valuable stepping stone for TSUBAME3.0 in 2015-16. Another theme for both TSUBAME2 and TSUBAME3 are convergence with Extreme Big Data where we expect to realize I/O capabilities in many TeraByte/s which is on par with the bandwidth entire global Internet, as a result of our new JST-CREST project "Extreme Big Data" in which we seek convergence of supercomputing and IDC Big Data processing.

UX Analytics - How to measure ROI of content and functions
Page Views, Unique Visitors, Bounce Rates and Conversion Rates are old-school metrics that often lead to "so what?". Big reports with these metrics don't give us enough insight about customers. Actions you can take upon these reports are limited.
Then what are the metrics that matter? The answer is User Experience.
In this session, Mak will introduce a user-driven approach "Concept Diagram" to define metrics and reports that UX practitioners and engineers can use to measure ROI of content and functions.

Data Science of emotion - how to create Omotenashi service from data science -
Big Data and Data Science have been about recommendation systems through natural language processing and/or collaborative filtering, as well as prediction models through machine learning. Is innovation really important or is it merely hype fueled by the development department? Is it true that a company with an innovative research and development department has a good chance of success? What does the companies Apple and 3M have in common?
First part of this session will try to shed light on the questions above, and at the same time explain how having a multidisciplinary organization like RIT can positively influence Rakuten. The second part will discuss our approach to innovation, while introducing a new smartphone service concept called "Landmark" which address the gamification of local & mobile deal discovery.

Product Science
Since Rakuten Ichiba business is based on the e-marketplace model, organizing product data is an important subject for research scientists. This "Product Science" session introduces Rakuten's efforts to organize product photos and text descriptions as a science.

Chiba:
As the use of product photos is increasing, image processing is getting to play an important role in e-commerce. Chiba is conducting research in Computer Vision and Image Processing. He will be introducing recent activities at RIT, specifically about text detection in images. Product photos include not only editing text by an image editing tool, but also text on the product itself. Detecting such text is an active area of research called text detection in natural scenes.

Shinzato:
Structured product data (e.g, <grape, chardonnay> for the wine category) are crucial for many applications such as faceted navigation. However, since structured data are not always provided by the merchants, it is important to build technologies to create this structured data from unstructured data. I'll talk about the unsupervised methodology for generating structured data from product descriptions.

Sekine:
Rakuten is expanding to the world. RIT is working towards the direction by the technologies. I will introduce how our technologies are helping Rakuten to be global.

HTML5 in Rakuten
The HTML5 Project Team was established in 2012 in order to promote HTML5-related technologies to the entire Rakuten group. In the past, we released the "HTML5 Implementation Guide" to help engineers and designers to utilize HTML5, developed UI prototypes using HTML5, and merged several projects to support them with HTML5.
Now we have developed the "Technology Conference 2013" site and are adopting HTML5 techniques in order to provide new interactions and usability, and also utilize the latest front-end tools such as a template engine, PhantomJS, Grunt, etc. to develop more efficiently.
In this session, we will introduce HTML5 use cases at Rakuten, our past activities, and how we developed the Technology Conference 2013 site.
